Fun Ways to Practice Hand Lettering Every Day (Even If You're Busy!)
Share
Looking for fun ways to practice hand lettering without feeling overwhelmed? Whether you're just getting started or trying to sharpen your brush lettering skills, adding small moments of practice into your day can make a huge difference. Hand lettering doesn’t have to be time-consuming or complicated. In fact, practicing a little every day will help you build muscle memory and confidence much faster than long practice sessions once in a while.
Today, I’m sharing some of my favorite ways to fit hand lettering practice into your daily routine, even if you're busy. Whether you have five minutes or fifteen, these ideas will help you make progress—and enjoy the process!
Start Your Day with a Quick Quote
Choose a simple, encouraging quote and letter it every morning. This could be:
- Something that motivates you.
- A Bible verse.
- A favorite phrase like “You’ve got this.”
Use your planner, a sticky note, or even a scrap sheet of paper. This small habit turns lettering into a calming morning ritual and lets you practice brush lettering daily without pressure.
Use Alphabet Drills as a Warm-Up
One of the best ways to practice is by focusing on one letter each day. You can:
- Practice uppercase and lowercase versions.
- Play with different styles.
- Keep a dedicated lettering notebook to track your progress.
Make Your To-Do List in Hand Lettering
Turn your daily to-do list into a lettering exercise! Use faux calligraphy or your brush pens to write out:
- Tasks
- Reminders
- Shopping lists
Not only do you get lettering practice, but your lists look much prettier, too.
Decorate Your Planner or Journal
Planners and journals are perfect places for lettering practice:
- Create hand-lettered headers for each section.
- Letter the days of the week or monthly titles.
- Add simple doodles alongside your lettering.
This is one reason I designed my Class Collection and journals—to give you beautiful spaces for creative planning!
Join a Hand Lettering Challenge
If you struggle to stay consistent, try a daily lettering challenge! They are extremely easy to find, and just because you're participating doesn't mean you have to post your results (if you're shy about your progress). You can:
- Follow popular Instagram or Pinterest prompts.
- Or create your own 30-day challenge with words you love.
Daily challenges give you structure and help keep your practice consistent and fun.
Letter Your Favorite Song Lyrics or Quotes
Instead of just writing random words, letter phrases that inspire you:
- Song lyrics
- Movie quotes
- Lines from books
This makes practice more creative and enjoyable, and you can focus on creating a finished piece if you’d like.
Create DIY Lettered Gifts
Put your practice to use by making:
- Bookmarks
- Greeting cards
- Gift tags
- Small framed quotes
These small projects let you practice while making something meaningful for friends and family.
